2026 Ford Ranger Line-up for South Africa: What’s Changing?

2026 Ford Ranger Line-up for South Africa: What’s Changing?

March 6, 2026

The Ford Ranger has been one of South Africa’s most popular bakkies for years. It’s known for its toughness, strong towing ability and everyday practicality. Now, Ford has confirmed that a revised Ranger line-up will arrive in South Africa during the first half of 2026, bringing some interesting changes to engines, model grades and overall positioning.

While the Ranger remains a direct competitor in the bakkie market, these updates are worth noting for anyone considering their next vehicle. Here’s a closer look at what the updated 2026 Ford Ranger range will include and how the line-up is expected to change.

A New Petrol Engine Joins the Ranger Range

One of the biggest updates coming in 2026 is the introduction of a 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

This new 2.3T EcoBoost motor produces 222 kW and 452 Nm, giving the Ranger strong performance while offering an alternative to diesel power.

At the same time, Ford will phase out the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine from the Ranger line-up. The brand is instead expanding the use of its 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, which will now appear in more variants than before.

This V6 engine delivers 184 kW and 600 Nm, making it one of the most powerful diesel engines available in the bakkie segment.

Introducing the New Ranger Sport Grade

Ford is also adding a new Ranger Sport model to the line-up.

This variant will sit between the XLT and Wildtrak models, offering buyers another option in the middle of the range.

The Sport will be available with two engine options:

  • 2.3-litre turbo petrol (4×2)
    3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel (4×4)

This new grade gives buyers a balance of performance, styling and practicality, while filling the gap between the more work-focused XLT and the premium Wildtrak.

Changes to the Ranger Body Style Line-up

The 2026 update will also bring some changes to the Ranger’s body style offerings.

Ford will continue offering single cab, super cab and double cab versions, but the distribution of variants will shift slightly.

Single Cab Ranger

The single cab line-up will remain focused on work-ready models, with three variants:

  • Ranger XL 4×2 (automatic)
  • Ranger XL 4×4 (manual)
  • Ranger XL 4×4 (automatic)

All of these models will continue using the 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel engine producing 125 kW and 405 Nm.

This engine will receive an update that replaces the previous wet belt system with a timing chain, while automatic models will now use a 10-speed automatic gearbox.

Super Cab Ranger Range Expands

Ford is increasing the number of Super Cab Ranger variants from five to seven models.

This is partly due to the introduction of the new Sport grade, which will be available in this body style.

The Super Cab range will include:

  • XL variants
  • XLT variants
  • The new Sport models
  • A V6 Wildtrak

All Super Cab Rangers will now come with the 10-speed automatic transmission as standard.

Double Cab Range Slightly Reduced

The double cab line-up will shrink slightly, dropping from 15 variants to 13 models.

However, it will still include the most popular versions of the Ranger, including:

  • XL
  • XLT
  • Sport
  • Wildtrak
  • Tremor
  • Platinum
  • Ranger Raptor

The Wildtrak X will no longer be sold as a separate model. Instead, it will become an option package available on the Wildtrak 4×4.

The Ranger Raptor Remains the Flagship

At the top of the range, the Ford Ranger Raptor continues as the high-performance flagship.

This model uses a 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol engine producing 292 kW and 583 Nm, making it the most powerful Ranger available.

Unlike most other Rangers sold in South Africa, the Raptor is not built locally at Ford’s Silverton plant.

Updated Styling and Design

Ford’s Australian division has also confirmed that the refreshed Ranger will feature a darker, more aggressive design look.

Some of the styling changes expected include:

  • Gloss black exterior trim
  • Matte black finishes replacing chrome accents
  • Updated wheel designs
  • New paint colour options

These changes will apply to both the exterior and interior, giving the Ranger a more modern appearance.

Improved Technology and Features

While Ford has not yet revealed all the details, the brand has confirmed that the refreshed Ranger will receive selected upgrades to features and specifications.

These improvements are expected to focus on:

  • Connectivity
  • Practicality
  • Safety technology
  • Overall value

More information will likely be revealed closer to the South African launch in April of 2026.

Final Thoughts on the 2026 Ford Ranger

The upcoming Ranger update shows that Ford is continuing to evolve its popular bakkie with new engine options, improved technology and a broader choice of models.

Key highlights of the 2026 Ranger range include:

  • A new 2.3-litre turbo petrol engine
  • Expanded use of the 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel
  • Introduction of the new Ranger Sport model
  • Expanded Super Cab line-up
  • Updated styling and features

For buyers in the South African bakkie market, the Ranger remains a strong contender in a highly competitive segment.

If you are researching your next vehicle, it’s always worth comparing different models and considering factors like running costs, reliability and aftersales support before making a final decision.
